There was a time when LED lighting was confined to the stand-by button on the TV and in Christmas lights but with recent technological developments LEDs are now everywhere. But do they live up to the hype? We take a look at the pros and cons of LED lighting.
LEDs are more energy efficient, longer lasting and durable than conventional bulbs. For example, LEDs create efficient light that does not produce heat, unlike incandescent lights, which waste 90% of their energy in heat, and CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) that waste 80%. If you position a conventional bulb in a recessed lighting fixture it will lose as much as 50% of the light into the fixture.
They’re cheaper to run too; up to 80% cheaper thanks to their high efficiency and low power usage. LEDs are also dimmable and give off light in a certain direction, which adds to their efficiency.
The lifespan of an LED is measured not by when it burns out but when its brightness falls below 70%. The lifespan of a high-powered white LED ranges from 35,000 to 50,000 hours, compared with 750 to 2,000 hours for incandescent bulbs and 8,000 to 10,000 for CFLs. Also, when you join the club and buy lights for life you will receive a lifetime warranty.
Unlike conventional light bulbs, LEDs do not have any glass components making them much more robust and durable.
LEDs are more expensive to buy but the prices are falling year by year. And you have to consider the fact that one LED light bulb can produce the same wattage as 60 incandescent bulbs and the price of one LED light bulb is less than half the price for 60 incandescent bulbs.
There have been some reports of LEDs flickering, but a well designed LED light will not flicker.
LEDs are significantly more energy efficient, longer lasting and durable than conventional light bulbs. Therefore, the initial investment is repaid in a short time. It is worth paying that little bit extra to make sure you get a well designed and manufactured LED light to guarantee the best performance.
